After endless discussions and a remarkable battle, you have convinced your beloved to visit the most romantic island of the Aegean Sea!

With a shape that reminds a little of a croissant, and a reputation that spreads to the most distant countries abroad, one thing is certain… This island of the Cyclades will surely steal your heart.

What to do in Santorini

1. Try local flavors

It would be a tragic mistake to go to Santorini and not try its wonderful local dishes. It is one of the top gastronomic destinations in the Aegean both for its food and for the restaurants and taverns with their special decoration and unique view.

There are taverns and restaurants for all budgets, but it takes searching and caution because it is very possible to choose the wrong tavern and pay very dearly for a not so good meal. To be sure that your money and experience will be worth it, choose places with award-winning chefs.

Try the island’s famous fava and tomato meatballs, salted cod, garlic pasta and the so-called poor man’s meatballs or pseudokeftedes.

2. Excursion to Akrotiri

Akrotiri is a top destination if you are a history buff. Although it is not as advertised as Vergina or Mycenae, it is one of the most important archaeological sites of the entire Aegean, at a distance of 15 km from Fira.

Stone-paved streets, exquisite wall paintings and findings of an ancient civilization that remained in obscurity for more than 3,500 years will captivate you.

3. Visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thera

The Museum of Prehistoric Thira is definitely one of the museums you must visit. It is easily accessible, with great exhibits and very important finds from excavations. Often those who have visited it mention that it looks like “diving into the depths of Aegean history”.

It can be easily combined with the visit to Akrotiri, completing it. Only for the Museum of Prehistoric Thira the price is €6, while there is also a combination ticket.

4. Watch the sunset

The magical Santorini sunset is itself a major attraction for thousands of tourists every year due to the amazing color palette it creates during its duration. The castle of Oia is the top choice for sunset, but it is not the only place from where you can admire the special feeling that the sunset offers in Santorini.

At the Lighthouse in Akrotiri, the sun seems to literally dive into the sea, while the crowd is much less than in Oia. On the beach of Vrychada, the volcanic setting creates a very special atmosphere, while the view from Imerovigli, Prophet Ilias or Firostefani is just as captivating.

5. Go diving

Perhaps only diving enthusiasts can appreciate the uniqueness of such an experience. The seabed in Santorini is anything but ordinary.

In addition to its rich underwater treasures, such as red fish, colorful sponges or sea slugs with their wonderful colors, you will have the opportunity to admire volcanic rocks, unique in the Mediterranean.

6. Stay in a cave house

Another unique experience offered by this magical island. Cave houses are essentially houses built into the rock. The locals built them in this way to protect themselves from the winds.

They offer coolness in the summer and heat in the winter, while their architecture lends an anarchic beauty to the landscape. If you are claustrophobic try it at least for one night. Worth!

7. Taste wine from a winery

In addition to the fantastic sunset and the archaeological interest of the area, the volcanic vineyards of more than 3200 years of age, attract every year a large number of tourists who are wine lovers.

Visit some of the region’s award-winning wineries and travel the world of the senses in a different way.

8. Go on an organized excursion

If the time of your stay allows it, visit travel agencies in the area and choose the package that suits you. The view of the area at sea is something you will remember forever!

We suggest packages that include a visit to the Volcano, the Hot Springs, swimming in Korfos and Thirasia.

9. Trade of Thira

Emporio or Niborios is 12 km away from Fira and is the largest village of Santorini. It was the point of sale – and possibly production – of products during the 17th century, while the local residents often visit the village for supplies.

The medieval Kastelli and the Tower of Goula located in the village are a masterpiece of architecture and are definitely worth a visit.

They may say that beauty is subjective, but in the case of Santorini the issue is not whether you will like it, but how much. The enchanting view and the waters of the Cyclades, the sunset that even compels tourists to applaud, the volcano that formed its unique lunar shape, the characteristic architecture of the houses along the Caldera and the endless beauties of the island adored by lovers, they are pieces of a unique puzzle of a summer in Greece.
